Red grouper

Epinephelus morio

Red grouper
Identification

A heavy-bodied, thick-lipped bottom fish with brick-red to brownish-red coloration and a squared-off tail.

Where It's Found

Rocky bottom, reefs, and ledges of the Gulf of Mexico and, to a lesser extent, the Southeast Atlantic coast, from nearshore structure out to deep offshore drops.

Vulnerable (IUCN 3.1)

Fishing Notes

Bottom fishing with heavy tackle near structure is standard — grouper dive hard for cover the instant they're hooked, so stout gear and a fast hookset matter.
